The Temporary Work visa 403 is designed for individuals who wish to work in Australia under specific circumstances. This visa allows you to undertake temporary work in the country and is divided into several streams, each catering to different work situations. Streams Under Temporary Work visa 403 

  • Government Agreement stream 

Features 

  • Purpose: This stream allows you to work in Australia under the terms and conditions of a bilateral agreement between the Australian Government and a foreign government. 
  • Duration: This is a temporary visa. You can stay for the time you are specified in your visa grant notice. This may be up to 4 years unless the Australian signatory has asked for a shorter period. You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending this visa.  
  • Flexibility: This stream is tailored to meet the needs outlined in the international agreement. With this visa you can travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while your visa is valid.

Eligibility 

  1. Be engaged under the terms and conditions of a bilateral agreement between Australia or an Australian state or territory government and another country.  

You must: 

  • meet the terms and conditions of the agreement 
  • meet any licensing or registration requirements as part of your employment 
  • demonstrate your employment or activity in Australia is of benefit to Australia. 
  • Your employment or activity in Australia must benefit Australia. 
    2. Have the support of the signatories to the agreement: Your stay must have the support of both the Australian signatory and the foreign signatory to the bilateral agreement you intend to work under. You don’t need a sponsor.

  • Foreign Government Agency Stream 

Features 

  • Purpose: This stream is for individuals employed as a foreign government representative or working for a foreign government agency. 
  • Duration: This is a temporary visa. You can stay until the time we specify in your visa grant notice, which may be up to 4 years. 
  • Specific Roles: Includes diplomatic and consular positions, and other official roles within foreign government agencies. 
  • Flexibility: With this visa you can travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while your visa is valid. And you can also include Members of the family unit in your application.

Eligibility 

  1. Official Position: You must work as a representative of a foreign government agency that does not enjoy official status in Australia (provided that you would not, as a representative of that agency, enjoy official status in Australia, e.g. diplomatic or consular accreditation) A foreign government agency includes: 
  • an organisation that is operating in Australia and is conducted under the official authority of a foreign national government (including foreign tourist and media bureaus, trade offices and other foreign government entities). 
  • an organisation that is operating in Australia and that is conducted under the official authority of an international organisation recognised by Australia. 

     2. Employment Verification: You must have a letter of support from a foreign government agency, foreign national government, or international organisation recognised by Australia. If you applied as a foreign language teacher, you must also provide a letter of support from an Australian school or relevant state or territory education authority.

  • Domestic Worker Stream (Diplomatic or Consular) 

Features 

  • Purpose: This visa stream lets a person aged 18 years or older do temporary full-time domestic work in Australia in the household of someone who holds a Diplomatic (Temporary) visa (subclass 995).  
  • Duration: This is a temporary visa. You can stay up to 12 months on your first visa. A further Domestic Worker stream visa will let you stay for the time specified in your Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) support letter 
  • Exclusive Employment: do full-time domestic work in the household of someone who holds a Diplomatic (Temporary) visa (subclass 995) 
  • Flexibility: travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while your visa is valid.

Eligibility 

  1. You must be 18 years of age or older. 
  2. Have the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: You must have a letter of support from the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

  4. Exclusive Role: Work exclusively as a domestic worker in the private household of the employer.

  • Privileged and Immunities Stream 

Features 

  • Purpose: This visa stream lets you come to Australia if you have, or expect to have, privileges and immunities under relevant legislation. You can stay in Australia on this visa while you are working as an international representative. 
  • Duration: You can stay for the time we specify in your visa grant letter. This is usually the time you are an international representative with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).  
  • Special Conditions: Includes specific privileges and immunities related to the treaty. 
  • Flexibility: travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while your visa is valid. You can also bring your immediate family.

Eligibility 

  1. Treaty Involvement: You must have, or expect to have, the privileges and immunities listed under the International Organisations (Privileges and Immunities) Act 1963 or the Overseas Missions (Privileges and Immunities) Act 1995.

  3. You must remain employed:  
  • You must be employed by the employer you were granted the work visa
