The Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485, or otherwise known as the skilled graduate visa 485, is a temporary visa that allows international students who have recently graduated from an Australian institution to live, work, and even continue studying in Australia. 

The Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485 is an excellent opportunity for international graduates to extend their stay in Australia, gain valuable work experience, and potentially transition to permanent residency. It offers flexibility and numerous benefits, making it a popular choice among recent graduates from Australian educational institutions.

The Subclass 485 visa Australia offers three streams, each made specifically for different needs and qualifications of varied individuals:

Important Announcement

The Australian Government announced changes to the Temporary Graduate visa programs in its recent Migration Strategy. These changes have come into effect from 1 July 2024. One major Change that has taken place is that the Replacement Stream has been closed off.  

Basic Eligibility

To be eligible for skilled graduate visa 485, you must generally meet the following criteria:

  • Post-Vocational Education Work stream 

You must 

  • be under 35 years of age. 
  • be in Australia when you apply for this visa.
  • hold an eligible visa.
  • have held a Student visa in the last 6 months.
  • have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list. 
  • have applied for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation on the skilled occupation list.
  • provide evidence of adequate health insurance for all applicants when you apply.
  • provide evidence you have applied for an AFP check when you apply.
  • provide evidence of the required level of English with the application.
  • Post-Study Work stream 

You must 

  • be under 35 years of age 
  • be in Australia when you apply for this visa 
  • have applied for and been granted your first Student visa on the basis of an application made on or after 5 November 2011 
    hold an eligible visa  
  • have held a Student visa in the last 6 months 
  • have a recent degree in a CRICOS-registered course 
  • provide evidence of adequate health insurance for all applicants when you apply 
  • provide evidence you have applied for an AFP check when you apply  
  • provide evidence of the required level of English with the application.

    Please Note: Select degree holders applying for an extension do not need to provide evidence of their English language proficiency.

  • Second Post-Study Work stream 

You must 

  • be under 35 years of age 
  • be in Australia when you apply for this visa 
  • hold a Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, or hold a Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream and have held a Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, as the main applicant 
  • have a degree in a CRICOS-registered course from an education institution based in an eligible designated regional area, that led to the grant of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream 
  • have lived in an eligible designated regional area for at least 2 years before applying for the second Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream 
  • have evidence of adequate health insurance for all applicants when you apply

The Graduate Work visa is ideal for international students with qualifications on Australia’s Skilled Occupation List. You can find this list on the Department of Home Affairs website to see if your skills are in demand. 

Post-Vocational Education Work applicants may only need to submit a Provisional Skills Assessment. You do not need to submit a Skills Assessment with your application if you are applying for the 485 Post-Study Work Stream and have completed a bachelor’s degree or above. 

You can stay for between 2 and 4 years. It is up to 5 years for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders. 

Yes, you can include your spouse and dependent children in your visa application. They can also apply to join you later as a subsequent entrant. 

English language proficiency requirements may vary depending on your circumstances. Refer to the Department of Home Affairs website for the latest details.
